JOHN JAMES AUDUBON – One of America’s most revered and treasured nature artists – who explored Florida on foot, including a walk through St. Augustine on the old wooden bridge that crossed the Maria Sanchez Creek in the center of town. “We refreshed ourselves with the first orange tree that we met” (circa 1834)

HENRY MORRISON FLAGLER – A prominent railroad tycoon who transformed St. Augustine into a grand & elegant tourist destination with the opening of the Hotel Ponce de Leon (1888). His love affair with the City through America’s Gilded Age inspired his contribution the art movement, architecture, history and style of each ‘neighborhood’.

ANNA MARCOTTE – The ‘St. Augustine News’ and the ‘Tatler’ devoted its columns (for 17 years) to describing the charms of the City and activities of the well-heeled winter visitors during the 1890’s. Marcotte was Editor and ‘gossip gatherer’ keeping a register of visitors, connecting people to each other during the winter ‘season’ for 10-cents a copy. A woman of determination, perseverance & industry.

MARIA ANDREU – As the first female light keeper in Florida, she took the position after her Lighthouse Keeper husband, Joseph Andreu, plummeted to his death in 1859. Maria Mestra de los Dolores-Andreu served from 1859-1862 receiving $400 salary annually. Today, the lighthouse is St. Augustine’s oldest surviving brick structure.

MARY LILY KENAN – Together with husband, Henry Morrison Flagler, she lived an abundantly lavish life – inheriting most of his grandiose estate – added to her own family’s wealth. As a university benefactor, she built a legacy of educational leadership in America. The first electric hotel clock is still in operation in the elegant parlor where she and Flagler entertained – inside Flagler College.
