Oldest Inn Celebrates 1957 Over Again

50th Anniversary of St Francis Inn’s ‘Secret’ Restaurant
Oldest Inn in America’s Oldest City Celebrates 1957 Prices

St. Augustine FL (March 2007) In a hidden box under the main staircase, a missing menu from the St Francis Inn’s former restaurant reveals a piece of history that is now coming to light 50 years later! Estimated to be open to the pubic for many years during the 1940’s-1950’s, St. Augustine’s oldest historic inn had a restaurant in the Inn located on the corner of St. George and St. Francis Streets. The restaurant has been closed for decades, although its doorway is still visible inside the Inn’s breakfast dining room.

The vintage menu is a charming memory of dining prices that reflect an era nearly forgotten today:
• T-Bone Steak, served with French Fried Potatoes and Salad Bowl $1.75
• Sirloin Tip Steak Sandwich, served with Mashed Potatoes and Salad Bowl $ .85
• Ham Omelet, Toast and Coffee $ .65
• Homemade Pie a la Mode $ .30

Owners Joe & Margaret Finnegan purchased the St. Francis Inn in 1985 with no recollection of the presence of a public dining room. “Pieces of the Inn’s historic puzzle become clearer through our local guests’ stories. Many people remember coming to the restaurant years ago with their families after church and we enjoy listening to each memory, from the way the room was set to the comfort food they ate.”

Excerpt from 50-year old St. Francis Inn Menu:
The Inn is an old historical Spanish residence built in 1791 on a lot which wsas a King’s grant, known as the Governor’s Palace. During the Civil War, it was used as headquarters for spies for the confederate Army. It has been enjoyed as an Inn for over 100 years.
