Cafe Alcazar - New Owner - April 2011

A Secret in the heart of St. Augustine’s Esteemed Lightner Museum

St. Augustine (April 2011) George Chryssaidis had his eye on one of the most beautiful spots in historic St. Augustine for a third restaurant to add to his growing dining realm. Already the proprietor of Athena Café and Georgie’s Diner, The Café Alcazar was ready for a professional facelift and new ownership. Nestled inside the famed Lightner Museum, this ‘secret’ little café has history surrounding it dating to 1888, ‘the Gilded Age’ of America’s oldest city.

The Hotel Alcazar was built by Henry Flagler in 1888. It was a casino, health spa and entertainment venue for elite guests that frequented the world famous Ponce de Leon Hotel across the street. The massive structure housed the largest indoor swimming pool in the world, a major focal point and attraction of the hotel AND St. Augustine. The Café now sits proudly in the space where the pool was located 120+ years ago surrounded by shops filled with antiquities and the collection of O.C. Lightner’s museum treasures.

Chryssaidis knows how to make his guests feel welcome, with music performed daily (either classical guitar or grand piano) and an extensive lunch menu. A sampling includes:

• Sesame Shrimp Appetizer
• Homemade soups (Angelemono – Classic Greek Soup)
• Oversized sandwiches and salads
• Crepes
• Seafood and Seasonally Inspired Entrees
• Homemade desserts (Crème Brulee Cheesecake).
