SPRING LAKE INN CATCHING RAYS

SPRING LAKE INN CATCHING RAYS - Solar Power a Legit Option for Energy Conscious Innkeepers

Spring Lake, N.J. (Jan 2008) Barbara and Andy Seaman are ‘beaming’ about the new solar power installation in their grand historic inn at the Jersey shore. Newly inaugurated in this 1888 grand European-style ‘mansion by the sea’, there are numerous reasons for their decision and definite advantages that impact their guests and family. No longer having a reputation as a technology only a hippie could love, the economics are brilliantly clear that solar systems are more efficient and cheaper in this era of record high energy costs.

The Seaman’s 16-room spacious bed & breakfast, the Spring Lake Inn, which is one block to the ocean, is now a participant in the CORE Program for the state of New Jersey (Customer OnSity Energy Program). It’s part of NJ’s Clean Energy program and the Federal initiative to reduce reliance on foreign energy sources. According to Andy Seaman “The sunshine at the shore is a wonderful thing and it’s helping us reduce our energy needs for the Inn. In essence, we are now our own power producer with the sun as our means.”

Savvy innkeepers with two young sons, two and four years, this is the Seaman’s small part in making the earth environmentally in synch with their children’s future…a future with alternative energy. Barbara states “We want to set a good example for our kids. The energy demand in Spring Lake is great, especially during the summer vacation season. Our electric consumption will be greatly reduced, hopefully saving us ALL from blackouts and brownouts.”

From installing the gear to crunching the numbers, the Spring Lake Inn has joined the ranks of approximately 25,000 American households that have adopted solar power since 1999. The hardware has become more durable and equipment manufacturers now warranty them for 20-25 years against defects and power losses.

Does solar power make the inn more valuable in the historic hotel market? With statistics showing that every $1 reduction in fuel bills increases a property’s resale value by $10-$25, it could be a factor. But the Seaman family has no plan to leave, gazing far into the future . They are enjoying the new life they’ve brought into their vintage Inn. “And to think that this is the same sun that gives our guests their glorious tans!”
