STRESS BARRIER - EAGLE ISLAND by Edwin Ali

A tiny piece of heaven awaits those travelers who yearn for something extra-ordinary, something challenging, something that allows one to bask in the sun, unhindered by the mad scramble and tight schedule in every day life.

This private secluded and peaceful area is called Eagle Island, Georgia, where your accommodation is Eagle Lodge, a well built, fully furnished building that is the only one on the Island, where sunsets are a beauty to behold and where time stands still.

Owner-proprietor Andy Hill takes you to this beautiful surroundings from Skippers Fish Camp in Darien Georgia on his private speed boat which is used to go from island to island.

There are eight barrier islands in the area, some of which are occupied, but Eagle Island is where guests can feel secure and safe, as they will be the only ones on the property.

There are many opportunities apart from the relaxed atmosphere. Guests have the entire building and the island to themselves and can pursue their own agenda where time is not important but satisfaction is the essence of the adventure.

Activities include: crabbing, bird watching, fishing, kayaking, partaking in a bonfire, enjoy fresh oysters or pursuing your own dreams.

Captain Andy says: “At Eagle Island we specialize in making your dreams a reality by customizing our private island into your private island. Enjoy a romantic weekend for two, a family reunion, or a getaway with your friends. I will work with you to provide a simple relaxing weekend or a full-blown extravaganza.

At Eagle, you can enjoy the spectacular Georgia salt marsh eco system, offshore/inshore fishing, coastal cruises or full moon weekends. This private 10-acre island can allow you to explore endless possibilities. The island is only accessible via boat, which ensures the utmost privacy and anonymity. Round-trip boat transportation is provided with each visit.”

It is no wonder that Outside Magazine lists Eagle Island as one of the 50 best adventure hideouts in the United States.

Eagle Lodge was actually crafted by hand by Andy and a large portion of the materials used are from demolished buildings and old hotels while the door was from a cabinet shop.

An eco tour adventure to Sapelo Island provides the opportunity to learn something about the history of the island which has a population of 50 and 12 students, six white and six blacks.

The vast expanse of Spartina salt marsh adds to the complex beach and dunes system; the island’s cultural and natural history make this barrier island one of the coastal jewels in the area.

Eagle Lodge sits alone, appropriately enough; Eagle Island, is a 15-minute boat ride upriver from Darien, a small fishing town about 60 miles south of Savannah. The Darien River, Mayhall Creek and thousands of acres of marsh cut the house off from the rest of the world.

Eagle Lodge offers more than peace, quiet and solitude. There are two bathrooms and sleeping arrangements for 10. There is 1,500 square feet of screened porch and a hot tub. There is satellite TV and wireless Internet access. The house has a fireplace and a ping-pong table all in one package.

Apart from the oysters which Andy provides to wet the appetite of even the most meticulous of individual, crab pots are dropped off the island's dock and are filled every morning.

The magnificent beaches of Sapelo Island are a 15-minute boat ride away, and Andy can ferry visitors from Darien to the island and back. He cam also arrange charter fishing trips and day trips to Sapelo.

Six-nights on Eagle Island is $2,340. A weekend stay, with two-night minimum, is $500-$600 a night, depending on the number of guests. Shorter stays during the week are $400-$500 a night.
